Perth influencer Lissy Graham says our mums’ old glomesh bags have made a return thanks to a limited edition Oroton bag that only a lucky few will be able to get their hands on.
Created to celebrate Oroton’s 85th anniversary, only 85 Vera bags have been made in gold and black, making this $499 luxury item extremely exclusive nationwide.
Graham said the Vera was a nod to the glomesh “it” bags of our mothers’ and grandmothers’ youths and was a generational piece with longevity and a timeless design in mind.
“I remember the first glomesh bag I had was my grandma’s. I used to go over (to her house) and my cousins and I would frolic through her things and always see it and think we’d love to have that one day,” she said.
“She gave it to me, I still have it, and one of my mum’s as well — they were the ‘it’ bag and even though we’ve got so many worldwide designers so accessible, that is still probably one of the most recognised bags in Australia.
“The Vera is an extension of that, just a bit more modern and youthful.”
The socialite and mother of three said the bag was part of an era whereby the fashion industry was seeing a return of vintage and preloved trends.
“Vintage is becoming more popular, especially in the fashion industry when you want to set yourself apart a little bit, you don’t want to be a stock-standard cookie cutter of whatever the current trends are. Many people in the industry want to be setting trends or pulling those vintage pieces to put a look together,” Graham said.
“My advice would be don’t throw anything out, and anything your mum gives you, keep.”
Graham said the Vera bag stood out for multiple reasons, including its versatility.
“It’s a really modern twist on mesh bags. In Europe over the summer we are seeing a lot of women carry around metal bags, fringed bags, that really dress up an outfit. Even if you’ve just got on linen pants and a linen shirt, adding a little gold bag elevates the look completely,” she said.
“Being overseas, I love having a few pieces from home because you see so many international designers everywhere and when you are wearing something Australian, you do stand out.”
Th bag is not currently available for purchase but people can join a waitlist at Claremont’s recently opened Oroton store or online to be the first to know when they become available.
All the bags are numbered as well so customers are reassured their unique bag is theirs alone.
