Perth’s Best Steak Sandwich: Samson Brent from The Iluka restaurant wins for ‘mouth-watering creation’
A Gordon Ramsay protégé has scooped the crown of Perth’s best steak sandwich.
Samson Brent from The Iluka restaurant won over the judges for his “simply elegant” sanga during a red-hot competition at The Crown.
In a second day of high stakes competition, judges for the AHA(WA) & Little Creatures Best Steak Sandwich Competition declared that Brent’s creation was the most “mouth-watering” in the city.
They said the tender fillet beef and rich pepper sauce was “simply elegant.”
Brent won over the taste buds of judges who included, Australian Hotels Association WA CEO Bradley Woods, 6PR’s Oliver Peterson, Beta Spuds CEO Matthew Cocciolone and Lion’s National Craft Beer Ambassador Tania Lambson.
“Gordon Ramsay is my inspiration. I went and worked in his restaurant for three months in London,” Brent told PerthNow after he scooped his winner’s belt and trophy knife from Danny Connolly, Field Sales Director from Lion, who own Little Creatures and sponsor the event.
Diners can experience Brent’s tasty work at the Iluka modern pub just outside of Joondalup for a cool $32.
As for what makes his sanga juicer than his rivals — a cognac peppercorn sauce.
In all, the feast comprises of a Turkish roll, thinly sliced black Angus fillet, grilled onions, Roma tomato, and rocket, served with hand-cut skin-on-fries.
“I have been a chef since 2016,” Brent said. “My dad and grandparents have always eaten in nice restaurants and been into good food. I have eaten at the best restaurants in the world growing up.
“I just started working in the kitchens after school.”
“It feels really good. It’s a good feeling for the whole team. We put the hard work in, in the months leading, making thousands of them day in and day out. The hard work and the consistency we put in paid off.
Sharing their secret he said, “The reason ours is so special is the fillet we use. We use prime quality fillet — black angus grass fed — it’s a beautiful creamy peppercorn sauce that compliments it so well. Always make sure the bread is fresh. We use local bread. It’s simple. It’s not so many flavours mashed into one sandwich that’s why people come in and have it time and time again.”
The London-born Perth-raised chef hopes to help the business expand its empire.
“We are building a new venue so I will be executive chef of the two venues. It is called Hillarys Beach Club.”
His win comes after Premier Roger Cook helped judged Tuesday’s country category which went to Ats Johansson from the North West Brewing co. in Karratha.
