As a result of the implementation of Reddit’s new API rules, a number of highly popular third-party Reddit apps have ceased to function, while a select few have opted to charge users for access.
In a lengthy farewell post, Christian Selig, the founder of Apollo, expressed disappointment that Reddit terminated the app’s content access prematurely.

Selig had previously stated that adhering to the new rules would incur an annual cost of $20 million to maintain Apollo’s current functionality. Despite offering subscriptions, the app’s revenue falls short of covering this amount.
Selig announced in early June that the app would be shutting down by the end of the month. Another widely used Reddit app, BaconReader, has also disappeared.
Users who open the app will encounter a notice expressing gratitude and explaining that it is no longer operational due to “changes with the Reddit API.
” Sync for Reddit finds itself in the same predicament, having sent its users a notification of its impending shutdown. While a minimum of two third-party clients will continue to exist, they will now charge users to afford the cost of API access.
Relay for Reddit has announced plans to transition to a subscription-based model in the coming weeks, with the developer pledging to strive for the most affordable price point possible, aiming to keep subscription prices within reach.
Now Reddit has also issued an announcement that it will introduce subscriptions to cover the expenses associated with API access, although a specific rollout timeline has not yet been determined.
In April, Reddit declared its intention to commence charging companies for API access, starting on July 1st.
This decision primarily aims to monetize the data used to train large language models for generative AI.
“The Reddit corpus of data is truly valuable,” remarked Reddit CEO Steve Huffman in an interview with The New York Times.
“But we do not need to provide all of that value to some of the world’s largest companies for free.”
However, this change also impacts third-party clients, leading to community protests in mid-June, with certain subreddits temporarily going private.

While most participating subreddits have since reopened, some of the most popular ones allowed explicit posts as a means to financially impact Reddit, as advertisers are unable to target NSFW communities.
In the case of remaining closed subreddits, Reddit administrators have reportedly threatened their removal if they fail to reopen this weekend
