Animal Welfare Organizational Helped Vaccinate 300 Strays In Mumbai

The Rotary Club of Mumbai West Coast and a lot of individual donors raised funds to have over 300 community dogs vaccinated against rabies and other ailments. This was conducted in the Mindspace area in Malad West.

Swapna Sanke who was among the organisers said that they began giving the rabies and nine in one vaccines, they also administered some deworming medicines to the canines it was an initiative by the Rotary and Save our Strays group. She also stated that it was really difficult to raise money for this so they had to approach NGO’s and philanthropists.

She said that a lot of crowd funding had been done by animal feeders and activists on social media as tending to so many pooches is a huge challenge.

She added that it was important to vaccinate animals as their lives and human lives are interconnected. She also said that spreading awareness about the same was the whole purpose of this drive. The Rotary club also organised an online ‘Fun for Fund’ Tambola event.

Madhavi Desai, a Powai-based animal feeder, told TOI that it was commendable that large organisations and clubs were stepping forward to promote awareness about animal welfare. As individual animal lovers, each must feed and care for animals with their own money. She’d been doing this in the Ramashram district of Powai for 23 years, although they frequently suffer harassment from societies that object to animal feeding on spacious grounds.

Desai said that it was great that more NGOs were working to help animals, but her society just fined me ₹20,000 for ‘littering,’ despite the fact that she kept her feeding area clean. This fine is being challenged in court.

Sunish Subramanian, an activist with the Plant and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS-Mumbai), said that smaller organisations of animal caregivers found it difficult to acquire funds for the good cause a decade ago. Funds for feeding, vaccinations, and other animal health issues can now be sourced because of the advent of social networking platforms and increasing awareness. Also, the local municipalities like the BMC does dog sterilizations free of cost under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) policy.
