Asda yellow sticker labels: Savvy family-of-five pick up £51 Asda food shop for just £3

Paul and June Stakes, 54 and 50 from Wakefield, are regularly tasked with bringing in groceries for their three teenage children. When shopping, the family looks for where they can make savings. One way is picking up yellow sticker label deals, which recently saved them a huge £48.45 on their Asda groceries.

Paul, who runs Youtube channel It’s a Stakesy Thing with his family, told money saving-community LatestDeals.co.uk just how they did it.

He explained: “We got 45 individual items in this yellow sticker haul and at full price everything would have come to £51.60, but we paid just £3.15.

“We are a family-of-five with three children who eat hourly! So most of the goodies we pick up get eaten straight away as we make it a snack evening and watch a good film. We always shop for bargains – being from Yorkshire, we are known for liking good deals.

“We picked up three packets of Dairy Milk doughnuts which were originally £1.50 and had been reduced to 10p each, so we paid 30p instead of £4.50 for those.

“There were also two packs of muffins reduced from £1.50 each to 20p for both, saving us £1.80. Next up we noticed four packs of cookies which had been marked down to 10p from their original price of £1.50 each, so we picked up some oat and fruit cookies, milk chocolate and salted caramel ones, plus some Dairy Milk Oatie Bakes and Shortie Squares.

“Usually these would have cost £6 so we were chuffed to pay just 40p in total.”

The family managed to pick up other bargains including clotted cream scones, Oreo doughnuts and Dairy Milk Caramel ones for just 20p.

Paul added: “In the bread section we picked up two tiger loaf baguettes for 20p instead of £1.50, giving us a £1.30 reduction, along with 75p off a load of white bread as it was 10p instead of 85p.”

Heading to the fresh aisles, the family managed to pick up great deals on mushrooms, sweet potatoes as well as strawberries.

The savvy shopper went on: “There were some particularly good savings on strawberries, as these were originally £1.79 per pack but they had been reduced to 5p each. We picked up five packs of these. At full price we would have paid £8.95 but instead we handed over 25p, saving over £8.”

Other fresh items included in the food shop were Brussels sprouts, mangoes, fruit salad as well as a bag of melon and grapes for just 5p.

While discounted items tend to go on sale towards the end of the day, it can vary between retailers.

Some food stores put yellow sticker labels on items throughout the day, but in the evening is generally when shoppers can make the biggest savings as it is nearing the end of the day.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, said: “Paul and June have completed a truly impressive shopping haul here. Not many of us can say we saved £48 on our groceries, or that we picked up £45 items for £3!

“It’s worth checking out when your local supermarkets begin marking down food and timing your grocery shops accordingly. You may not always get lucky, but when you do be prepared to grab what you can and freeze as much as possible.

“Tricks like these will save you huge amounts of money in the long run.”
