BMW under EU scrutiny for Chinese EV production

The European Union has launched a major investigation into electric cars produced in China and sold in Europe. According to the European Commission, the prices of Chinese electric cars are being kept artificially low by Chinese subsidies and it is not happy about that. Not only Chinese car brands are being investigated, European car makers that build EVs in China also have the EU’s attention. Recently, the European Commissioner for Trade, Valdis Dombrovkis, indicated that it should also be investigated to what extent Tesla and European automakers receive subsidies in China. Now BMW has come knocking, according to reports from Reuters and Automotive News, among others.

BMW produces the electric variant of the X3, the iX3, in Shenyang, China. The iX3 is produced there for the European market, among others. BMW’s CFO Walter Mertl tells Automotive News that BMW has received a request for information from the EU about the iX3. The manufacturer should, among other things, provide information about matters such as Chinese investments regarding the iX3. Mertl warns that the EU investigation may impact all car manufacturers doing business in China and that the investigation could “do more harm than good.” BMW also fears the consequences of the introduction of a possible punitive tax on EVs built in China.

As mentioned, BMW is building the iX3 in China for the European market and sister brand Mini will also produce EVs in China. For example, the electric Cooper will soon come from China and Mini will probably also want to produce the electric Aceman there later.
