It’s official: a bill has passed the House and Senate to make Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, a federal holiday. President Biden is expected to sign it into law. The designation is long overdue: “Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom while encouraging self-development and respect for all cultures,” Representative Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas said on the House floor during the vote, which passed with overwhelmingly bipartisan support.
So how should you properly mark June 19 in a way that’s both celebratory and reflective? Vogue asked Marcio Ramos, Partner and Mixologist of The Honey Well in West Harlem, to share a summer cocktail with some special significance. He gave us the “If I D’ussé so Myself,” a cognac concoction with lemon juice, muddled pear, and agave syrup. (Cognac, for the uninitiated, is a spirit with strong ties to the Black community, in part due to its connection to both hip hop and jazz music.) “I wanted this cocktail to emphasize Black culture in all its refined glory,” Ramos says. “In short, the ‘If I D’ussé So Myself’ brings the crisp summer vibe to our already bright culture.”
So without further ado, Ramos’s recipe for his signature cognac cocktail.
If I D’ussé So Myself
2 oz D’usse Cognac Vsop
½ oz fresh lemon juice
¾ oz agave syrup*
3 slices of pear, muddled
Muddle pear slices in a shaker and add the remaining ingredients. Shake vigorously and fine strain in a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a slice of pear.
*To make the agave syrup, heat 2 cups of water on medium-low heat. Add the peel of 1 whole orange and 1 tsp of Allspice. Lower heat and add 2 cups of agave nectar. Once dissolved, strain and refrigerate.
