‘Hoon’ gender reveal: Melbourne man expected to be charged with 260 offences

A Melbourne man could be facing more than 260 charges for dangerous driving, including two occasions that allegedly formed part of a unique gender reveal celebration.

Police allege the 22-year-old Rowville man performed burnouts at two separate gender reveal parties.

In what’s referred to as a “hoon” gender reveal, the car creates a trail of either blue or pink smoke that announce the gender of an unborn child.

The first incident allegedly took place in July 2020 and the latest in July of this year – one allegedly for the man’s own soon-to-be-born child.

Victoria Police have called the alleged acts “reckless” and potentially dangerous.

“If you’re celebrating an impending birth and want to reveal the gender of your child, pop a balloon or cut a cake,” Sergeant Paul Holtzinger said.

“Don’t tear up our roads and recklessly put your family and friends in danger of serious injury or death”

“It’s not only bizarre and illegal behaviour but has the real ability to turn a moment of celebration into tragedy.”

The man faces another three charges related to other alleged hooning incidents in Dandenong South that took place this year.

During their investigation, officers allege the Rowville man and three co-offenders were involved in the theft of catalytic converters from cars across south Melbourne.

More than 70 vehicles were damaged, totalling up to $300,000 worth of repairs.

Police allege the group then on-sold the materials for their own personal financial gain.

Police seized 12 vehicles from Rowville and Bayswater they say are connected to the alleged offender, including several Holden Commodores.

A further three men in their 20s were arrested in connection to the thefts and are expected to face at least 60 charges each.

The 22-year-old is expected to face more than 200 charges for the thefts alone.
