Hyundai has issued a recall for more than 15,000 of its popular Venue small SUVs for potentially dangerous seat belts.
In the case of an accident the seat belt pre-tensioner inflator may fracture and send shrapnel through the car, potentially causing severe injury to passengers.
Seat belt pre-tensioners tighten the seat belt during a crash, helping keep the passengers in place and reducing potential impact trauma.
The company claims the problem is due to a manufacturing issue for vehicles built between 2020 and 2022.
Hyundai says there have been no known incidents in Australia.
The company will alert affected owners and urge them to visit their local dealership to have their vehicle repaired at no charge.
This isn’t the first time Hyundai has recalled cars in Australia for the same problem.
In August the car making giant recalled more than 5000 i30 sedans built between 2020 and 2022.
The US recall notice for the same issue says American safety authorities are aware of at least one instance where “the driver-side seat belt pre-tensioner allegedly deployed abnormally causing metal fragments to enter the rear cabin and resulting in injury to an occupant’s leg”.
In the US Hyundai recalled more than 230,000 Elantra and Accent small cars.
This isn’t Hyundai’s first recall this week. It follows a safety notice affecting almost 9000 Hyundai Santa Fe large SUVs.
The Santa Fes were recalled for a separate issue that could lead to a fire.
In that instance the issue stems from a manufacturing defect where the circuit board in the anti-lock braking system (ABS) module may short-circuit when exposed to moisture.
Hyundai advised owners to park their vehicle away from flammable materials and structures.
