Dog owners have been told to be on high alert after multiple pups were killed as a result of eating poisonous baits scattered around a popular Sydney dog park.
Three dogs have died after eating the baits while on a walk at Marks Park, between Bondi and Tamarama in Sydney’s east, prompting the local council to investigate.
Waverley Council officers searched the area on Wednesday and are urging anyone who has information to come forward.
Signs have been put up in the surrounding areas issuing the warning to dog owners.
“Warning: Multiple reports of dogs passing over the weekend due to unknown poisoning and/or baiting after walking their dogs at Marks Park,” the sign reads.
A council spokesman said rangers were speaking with people in the area.
“We ask that owners remain vigilant when exercising their dogs and monitor their dogs for any signs of illness,” the spokesman said.
“Dog baiting is not a common problem in Waverley but is devastating when it does occur.”
The council is not aware what type of suspected baiting is being used but is hoping to obtain a sample to have it analysed.
Once it is aware of the type of bait, reports can be made to police and the RSPCA.
Social media has been flooded with warnings after the news dogs had died in recent days.
“Steer clear of Marks Park with your four-legged friends,” one post read on Instagram.
“Three dogs now have passed due to poisoning, do not walk near Marks Park.”
Another Instagram user said a friend’s dog died within hours after eating the suspected bait.
“He was a young and healthy dog,” Maddy’s Dog School wrote.
