Peugeot 3008, 5008 getting new hybrid powertrain

Peugeot will complete the electrification of its lineup in 2023 by introducing a hybrid 5008.

The electrified three-row crossover will debut a new 48V mild-hybrid powertrain that will also be used in the related 3008.

It’ll mate a new-generation 101kW PureTech petrol engine with a new electrified dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 48V mild-hybrid system.

Peugeot says this will increase torque at low revs and cut fuel consumption by 15 per cent.

Unusually for a mild-hybrid, Peugeot also says the powertrain will enable “zero-emission driving for up to 1km at low speeds and for short distances in the city”.

“Whilst there are currently no plans at this stage for the new hybrid powertrains for the PEUGEOT 3008 and 5008, we continue to work closely with the factory to assess the suitability for introduction to the local market,” said a spokesperson for Peugeot Citroen Australia.

The company didn’t detail the displacement of the PureTech engine, though it says it will be the first brand within the Stellantis empire to use this powertrain.

Peugeot confirmed the new powertrain in a release that included an image of the current 5008, indicating it will be introduced in the twilight years of the existing model.

A next-generation 3008 has already been spied testing ahead of an expected debut in 2023, which points to a new 5008 being around the corner.

Currently, the 3008 is available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain but the 5008 isn’t – likely due to the impact on third-row space a large battery would have.

Peugeot has confirmed that, from the first half of 2023, each model in its range will be available with one or more electrified powertrains.

The headline acts are new electric versions of the 308 hatch and wagon, which will join petrol and plug-in hybrid variants, while the E-208 will also receive some improvements.

The light electric hatch will get the new 115kW electric motor of the upcoming E-308, with range improved by 38km to a claimed total of 400km under the stricter WLTP cycle.

Peugeot is also introducing an electric version of the recently revealed 408.

The brand currently offers plug-in hybrid versions of the 3008 and 508, as well as electric versions of the 2008 crossover, Partner/Rifter small vans, Expert/Traveler medium vans and Boxer large van.

Peugeot Australia introduced its first plug-in hybrids early in 2022 with the front-wheel drive 508 GT Fastback Plug-in Hybrid and all-wheel drive 3008 GT Sport Plug-in Hybrid, but it has yet to introduce any electric vehicles.

“Due to the unprecedented environment the global automotive industry is currently facing, there has been an unavoidable delay, until 2023, in the local arrival of Peugeot Australia’s first battery electric vehicles,” a spokesperson for Peugeot Citroen Australia told CarExpert.

“Our commitment to introduce electric vehicle offerings to the Australian market remains unaltered, with plans being finalised across electric passenger, SUV and LCV product offerings.”

In addition to hybrid and battery-electric models, Peugeot also offers a hydrogen fuel-cell version of its Expert van in Europe with 100kW of power, 260Nm of torque, and 400km of range.
