Dr Elizabeth Carter, who specialises in fraud, scams and deception at the University of Roehampton commented on Mary’s situation.
She said: “This has all the hallmarks of a very convincing type to scam, there’s credibility there, there’s a legitimate reason why you can’t talk to them, things that could have given off alarm bells were made more credible because in business we do give these vouchers as rewards to staff. So, the alarm bells are dulled down.
“Importantly here as well, the urgency with this case and many like this, it that the urgency is made legitimate. The person is given this responsibility and they want to do a good job.”
