Unlicensed driver caught twice by police while on drugs

A night of reckless driving has cost a Victorian man more than he bargained for after Geelong Highway Police caught him driving illegally not once, but twice in the same evening.

Just before 11pm on Friday evening, police intercepted a Holden ute filled with rubbish along Elizabeth St in Geelong.

The driver tried to convince police he was his older brother, but eventually owned up and admitted to driving unlicensed.

The 48-year-old Whittington man also returned a positive reading for methamphetamines and was instructed not to drive again.

At about 2.20am, just more than three hours later, police spotted the same Holden heading along Fellmongers Rd.

They attempted to stop the vehicle but it sped off and was not pursued for safety reasons.

The officers then drove to the home of the man they’d spoken with earlier, suspecting it was him driving the ute again while unlicensed and on drugs.

As they waited outside his house, the 48-year-old came huffing and puffing back to his house, where he admitted it was him again in the Holden vehicle.

He told police he had parked the car around the corner and had attempted to sprint home before police arrived.

When the man was drug tested yet again, he returned another positive reading for methamphetamine, but also tested positive for cannabis.

The Holden ute was then impounded for 28 days, costing the 48-year-old $1225.

He is expected to be charged on summons for drug driving, fail to stop on police direction, drive in a manner dangerous, speeding, stating false name and driving unlicensed.

The car was impounded as part of Operation Furlong, which is being run state-wide by police until 11.15pm on Tuesday.
