Why you definitely shouldn’t try the ‘sleepy chicken’ TikTok recipe

‘Silly and unappetising’ (Picture: TikTok)

Amongst all the genius hacks and legitimately delicious recipes, sometimes, TikTok throws a curveball.

Enter, the sleepy chicken.

It might sound like a cute character from a children’s book, but TikTok’s sleepy chicken ‘recipe’ is anything but.

The dangerous – and potentially lethal – recipe instructs chefs to cook chicken breast in cough syrup. Yep, you read that right.

Users say the medicine drenched chicken, also known as Nyquil chicken, will cure winter coughs and colds.

But the advice is, obviously, based on no real science, and could actually do more harm than good.

The recipe first appeared on TikTok back in January, but it’s had a renaissance – so much so that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – the government body responsible for protecting health – has had to step in.

In a recent warning issued by the FDA, the government agency addressed the dangers of the social media challenge.

‘This challenge sounds silly and unappetising – because it is,’ read the statement.

‘Boiling a medication can make it much more concentrated and change its properties in other ways.

‘Even if you don’t eat the chicken, inhaling the medication’s vapors while cooking could cause high levels of the drugs to enter your body.

‘It could also hurt your lungs. Put simply: Someone could take a dangerously high amount of the cough and cold medicine without even realizing it.’

The FDA also urged people to talk to their children about the recipe, telling them to keep over the counter and prescription drugs out of sight.

They added, ‘Sit down with your children and discuss the dangers of misusing drugs and how social media trends can lead to real, sometimes irreversible, damage.’

So if the gross blue colour of the chicken doesn’t put you off, hopefully that will.
